In northwestern Pakistan, the army has placed troops at seven of the eight main passes and trails into Afghanistan. The local tribesmen, fearing for their smuggling business, or efforts to support the Taliban in Afghanistan, have resisted at the eight pass. The army has lost a few dead and several more wounded. Some 2,000 Pakistani troops are involved, along with 500 Afghan and American troops on the other side of the border.
