Around 20 people were killed in various military actions around Burundi's capital, Bujumbura. Civilians blamed government troops for opening fire on innocents. The government troops claimed they were fighting rebels.

October 8; The European Union condemned the Burundian government for violating human rights while pursuing its "displacement policy" to combat rebel forces. The government tactic is to move whole villages into camps where the people can be controlled and the rebels isolated.

October 5; Hutu rebels of the National Liberation Front (military wing of the Hutu People's Liberation Party) killed 11 civilians in attacks north of Bujumbura. Meanwhile, peace talks among Burundi's warring factions, to be held in Tanzania, were postponed. indefinitely.

October 4; The government reported an attack by rebels on a military post outside of the Burundian capital, Bujumbura.

October 1; The government of Burundi denied reports that Burundian troops had massacred 30 people earlier in the week in an attack on a church in the town of Nyambuye.
