The Armies of Europe Encounter the French Revolution

Originally published in a now out-of-print hardcover edition in 2015, this rather overlooked book comprises essays on armies of France, Prussia, Austria, Russia, Britain, Spain, the German states, the Italian states, and the Ottomans, though oddly omitting that of the Dutch Republic, which took part in French wars of 1789-1802. The essays, by such noted scholars as Prof. Schneid, Dennis Showalter, Ciro Paoletti, and Charles Esdaile, offer background on the condition of each army prior to 1789, brief looks at their experiences during the wars, and considers how and why each army coped with that experience, adjusting or not to the new ways of warmaking.

The essays on the armies of Spain, the Italian states, the German principalities, and the Ottoman Empire are particularly useful given that they are usually neglected in the literature.

Although only lightly touching upon the actual course of the wars of the French Revolution, European Armies of the French Revolution, a volume in the UOP Campaigns and Commanders series, offers an excellent look at the evolution of the various armies that took part.
